APM Canada ran its first-ever Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Survey in January 2023. The survey was sent to all current and past APM participants in the program across the Toronto and Montreal chapters. The survey was conducted by a third party, Feminuity.

Of the respondents, 52% were women, 64% from racialized groups, and 30% were LGBQ+. While proud of the diversity of participants, people who were Black, Indigenous, Transgender and Non-Binary were deeply underrepresented, and will be a focus for APM Canada’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion efforts in the near future. Underrepresentation of Black and Indigenous people in Product Management has been shown across the industry in the US.

In the APM Canada survey, 89% of respondents believed APM Canada understands that diversity is critical to the APM program’s future success and 86% felt APM Canada values diversity. However only 55% believed that time and energy are invested in building diversity in the APM cohorts. As part of our commitment to improving access to underrepresented people in product through entry level roles in top tier product companies supported by learning programs, APM Canada will focus on improving in this area through scholarships and other key initiatives.
